Brevardian of the Week: Philip Jarrett!
Place of employment (what do you do & where?): Store Manager at Brevard Ingles
Any funny stories to share about your job?
I have several customers in the store that I like to scare when they come in to the store.
Any money-saving shopping tips (or best-kept secrets about Ingles) that you can share with us all?
Buy Laura-Lynn products… a lot cheaper than national prands and just as good. A lot are made by national brand companies.
What’s your biggest pet peeve, things shoppers do?
I hate it when a customer decides they don’t want something and they set it on the shelf and it ruins (like meat or frozen items).
Have you ever want to scream across the store, “People, a winter storm doesn’t mean it’s the end of civilization as we know it”…?
I have thought that several times, but the blizzard of ’93 changed that.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen people do in the store (that you can share)? Rolling turkeys down the aisle?
I’ve been in three different stores where customers have hit the gas instead of the gas and drove through the front windows.
What’s one item on your bucket list?
I would love to go to Alaska.
Ever had a brush with a celebrity in the Brevard Ingles?
Have not been lucky enough to see any celebrities in the 9 months I’ve been at the Brevard store.
Your favorite way to spend free time:
Love to play golf, hunt, fish and do anything outside.
If you were to give special praise to someone right now, who would it be?
The customers of Brevard that have made me feel so welcome in Brevard.
What’s one of the earliest memories you have of your childhood?
Had to get up at 4am on Christmas morning because my Dad worked at WLOS and had to open the station.
Have you ever had a nightmare boss?
I am lucky to have had great bosses.
What’s the best part about being the boss (at Ingles)?
I’ve always enjoyed the one-on-one relationship with customers in the store – Brevard customers are the best!
What’s the worst part of being the boss (at Ingles)?
Anything that happens bad always comes down to me. Nothing is really bad though.
Would you change careers if you could go back and do it all over again?
I wouldn’t change a thing. It has been a great place to work 40 years.
What song (or music artist) takes you back to your high school days?
Anytime a song is played by the group Boston.
Who was your favorite singer or group growing up?
Kiss – hard to believe?
What kind of music do you like to listen to today?
I like classic rock & southern gospel music.
What’s the naughtiest thing you did as a child?
Not really naughty, but when I was in the 1st grade, I walked down to a creek to see if it had frozen before school, and time got away from me. The school called my mother to see where I was because other students had seen me that morning. Needless to say, everyone was in a panic. An hour later, I walked in to the classroom. I was in big trouble at home.

Brevardian of the Week: White squirrel rehabilitator Jennifer Burgin!
Spouse & children: Kelly Burgin, and children James (age 29) and Jordan (age 27)
Place of employment (what do you do & where?): I’m an RN at Care Partners Home Hospice, I am one of the weekend on-call nurses
How did you come to be a wildlife rehabilitator?
I had always loved animals and ‘rehabbed’ long before I knew that was what it was called or that you had to be licensed.
What are some typical things you do (and see) in your work with animals?
I now work almost exclusively with squirrels. In the past, I rehabilitated many different types of animals. Most of the squirrels I get are orphans. They usually also have some type of injury, either from a fall from the nest, or when a tree fell or was cut down. Also, many have bites and scratches from the cat or dog that found them. I also get a lot of squirrels that have head or spinal cord injuries, most often from being hit by a car. Because of my experience and training, I specialize in critical care, the ones that come in with severe injuries and wounds. I usually send the healthy orphans to other rehabilitators once they are stabilized.
What’s the craziest call you’ve ever gotten related animals?
There are so many crazy stories. Someone called about a nest that came crashing down out of a tree and they said the squirrels were almost full grown but their tails were tied together. I thought they were exaggerating, but when the family arrived with a big cardboard box inside were four squirrels and their tails were actually knotted together with pine tar and twigs. Then there was the squirrel that I had to give CPR.
Do you have a favorite animal you’ve worked with?
The squirrel, of course.
Do you think animals have feelings?
Yes, but not in the way humans understand feelings.
Have you ever been in a life-threatening situation with animals?
Not my life, but many of the animals are very close to death when I get them.
How many white squirrels have you rescued in all (in addition to the one at my house… do you remember that??)
Of course I remember the one at your house. I can’t say for sure, but I’m sure at least a hundred.
Any funny stories to share re white squirrels?
There was a lady that called me who regularly fed and watched the white squirrels in her neighborhood. She noticed one lying very still at the bottom of a tree at the edge of her property and began to worry when she saw it hadn’t moved all morning. Then she noticed another that also appeared lifeless and was worried that someone may be poisoning the neighborhood squirrels. She had a very steep hill in the back yard and couldn’t safely get down there herself to check on them. I agreed to come to her home and investigate. When I finally got there and climbed down I discovered the two white squirrels were really a couple of discarded plastic grocery bags. Of course she was so embarrassed; we had a good laugh about it. I meet the nicest most caring people in the world through these animals. It says a lot about someone’s character if they willing to take the time out of their busy day to try to find help for an orphaned or injured animal.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A vet

Love it! However, I have been so busy since moving here a month ago, I haven’t had enough time to explore, etc.

Not yet, – having just moved here, I am still in the process of sampling all the various restaurants, etc.

As a preteen, I loved the Monkees. Later my tastes evolved to singers such as Cat Stevens, James Taylor and then others such as Springsteen, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac.
