Brevardian of the Week: Nancy Richards!

Nancy Richards

Nancy Richards

Place of employment:
I am self-employed. I am a co-owner of two small companies, RS Rover LLC and SN Homes LLC. We buy modest homes, fix them up, and rent them, long-term, to regular working people. Our slogan is “Clean, safe and affordable housing.” We have several employees who work hard to provide nice living spaces and to keep them well-maintained.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I am an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. I formerly served as a College Chaplain in Boston.  I consider myself an artist.

What’s one item on your bucket list?
I have already traveled to all seven continents, but hope to continue traveling and meeting diverse people for as long as I am able.

What are your hobbies?
I paint, read, ride horses (a little bit, in an old lady way), I dabble in many arts – pottery, glass bead-making, collage, jewelry, sewing, etc., I love the outdoors.

Ever had a brush with a celebrity?
Yes, I had the opportunity to meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu and to present him with a gift. He later sent me a hand-written thank you note, which I found very touching.

What are you most proud of in your life?
I have not done anything that is particularly important, but I have tried hard to listen to and care about people. I have been privileged to meet people of all ages, races, nationalities, sexual orientations, religions and to learn from them all. I have tried to pass on some of the love and care that I have been blessed with from others.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Brevard?

I love the variety of people who either grew up here or came from near and far. The land is beautiful… mountains, waterfalls, sunsets. I love to stroll through the woods near my house and breathe in the fresh scents of nature.  I also love the fact that we have great music, and arts. There is a lot to do here, and many talented people to admire.

Tell us about your work with Rise & Shine:
I am the Chair of the Board of Rise & Shine, which is an after-school enrichment program for disadvantaged kids. We serve 50 students, who are in grades K-12. We offer one on one tutoring and homework help, a specialized reading program, cultural history and pride, and a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum. Most of our scholars are African American, though some are Hispanic, Native American, Asian, or Caucasian. The program was founded 18 years ago, after a Ku Klux Klan march took place in Brevard, as one of several responses to racism. The thought was that supporting the education of children, and bringing people of all races together in a learning environment would help to increase understanding, opportunity, and racial equity for all.

The program was founded by a coalition of churches, led by Pastor Frederick Gordon, of Bethel A Baptist Church, who has recently passed away, and by Faye Walker, who passed away a few years ago. We are feeling the loss of our founders, but are determined to carry on this important program.

Brevardian of the Week: Kimba Colley Nichols!

Kimba Nichols, Executive Director of Friends For Life Forever Farm in Lake Toxaway

Kimba Nichols, Executive Director of Friends For Life Forever Farm in Lake Toxaway

Children: Misty Brewster (age 37), Brian Nichols (age 33), Stephanie Nichols (age 23), Jordan Nichols (age 22)

Place of employment:  Executive Director of the Friends For Life Forever Farm, Lake Toxaway, NC

Tell us about your job at Friends for Life Forever Farm!
I basically shake hands and kiss babies! Seriously, I am responsible for promotions and fundraising, in addition to the oversight of our ten-acre sanctuary located in Lake Toxaway, 12 employees, and our Treasure Shop located in Brevard.

How can people help?
Donate time, talent, and money. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities and are always in need of funds to help us support the farm and those in need in our community.

Tell about the best pet you ever had.
The best pet I ever had was Lucky. He was a long haired ginger cat that found me and stole my heart. He disappeared in 2001 in Cashiers and he took my heart with him.

Tell about other pets you had.
When I was raising my children in the 90’s we had 10 cats, a dog, and a rabbit. The Big Kahuna was a gray kitty named Douglas MacArthur Nichols IV, aka Wittle. He was the best kitty ever and was a true and loyal family member. He always won the “prettiest eyes” and “fattest cat” award in the Cashiers Humane Society Cat Show every year. The other furbabies all knew they were part of the family and would even sleep together, including the rabbit, on really cold nights :)

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
The CIA once flew me to Washington DC for a job interview!

What’s one item on your bucket list?
A cruise to Antarctica

How do you spend your free time?
Reading Bon Appetit magazine and dreaming about a kitchen with double ovens and a KitchenAid mixer.

Brevardian of the Week: Josh Freeman!

Josh Freeman (Planning Director, City of Brevard) & his family

Josh Freeman (Planning Director, City of Brevard) & his family

Name: Joshua Sage Freeman

Spouse/children:
Sara Freeman, wife
Hazel Freeman, daughter, age 14
Isabelle Freeman, daughter, age 10

Place of employment: City of Brevard, Planning Director, 10 years

Are you involved in any volunteer work?:
I serve on the board of the Community Focus Foundation.

What do you love most about your job?
I am able to be a servant to my home community. I am fortunate to be involved in work that results in long-term improvements within the community. For example, my office plays a direct role in the creation of new trails and parks, improvements to public infrastructure, etc. These directly impact and improve Brevard & Transylvania County’s quality of life / quality of place. That is very satisfying to me.

What part of your job stresses you out the most?
It is difficult to provide a concise answer to this question. There is definitely a down side to being in public service in your home town, particularly when it is a small town; you’re never really off duty; sometimes our customers will personalize issues and go on the offensive in very personal ways; there are so many competing interests that you’re pulled in every direction and it sometimes seems that you can make no one happy; you sometimes feel that you’re working under a microscope and that you’ll be judged harshly no matter what you do.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A farmer, forester, policeman, and international aid worker, all at the same time!

What’s one item on your bucket list?
I’ll give you two: (1) My wife, Sara and I want to visit as many National Parks as possible before our girls graduate from high school; (2) I want to take a ferry trip from Denmark to Iceland, stopping in the Faroe Islands along the way.

What are your hobbies?
I grow lots of garlic; help out on the family farms when I have time; canoe; skeet shoot; hang out with my family.

Ever had a brush with a celebrity?
I have the good fortune of working back stage at the Mountain Song Music Festival, which has enabled me to meet a number of celebrities in the bluegrass world. My favorite brush was meeting Doc Watson.

What are you most proud of in your life?
I am proud of the fact that I have the good fortune of being able live, work, make a difference and raise a family in the one of the most beautiful places on earth.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Brevard?
It’s absolutely beautiful, and I am lucky to be surrounded by a large family.

Any funny stories to share (about Brevard or anything)?
None that won’t get me in trouble with somebody…

If you had $100 free money right now to spend in Brevard, how would you spend it?
I’d give $50 to Bread of Life; then I’d go to the library, check out a good book, pay off any library fines, pick up a garlic and beef dish from Pad Thai, then spend the afternoon eating and reading at Brevard Brewing.
