Brevardian of the Week: Robert Frank!

Robert Frank, WSQL News Director

Robert Frank, WSQL News Director… “You heard it here first!”

Robert Frank is the News Director at 1240 WSQL, a server at Square Root (the boy does nothing but work, it seems!), and dad to his precious 4-year-old son, Blake. Lisa and I will be chatting with him on-air today at 1pm on the “I Love Brevard” radio show!

Are you involved in any volunteer work?:
Not as much as I’d like to be. I work two jobs and am the father of a 4 year old. I did participate in a dance fundraiser. Also, I judged a talent show for Rosman High School. I used to help Michael a bit at the Bread of Life. That man does some amazing things.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A doctor. Then I saw blood and guts and changed my mind real quick.

What other names did your parents consider naming you?
Otto. My dad liked the palindrome part. Instead, he named me Bob.

Tell of any other nicknames in your family.
Terr Bear is my sister. Rog is my brother or Bubba. We call each other Bubba.

Did you ever pretend to be sick as an excuse to stay home from school?
All the time. :-)

What’s the best practical joke you ever played on someone?
I gave fake lottery tickets for Christmas.

Who is your favorite singer or group?
Such a widespread question. Depending on genres, women/men I love Sam Cooke, Thelonious Monk, Atmosphere, Alabama, Rolling Stones, Whitney Houston. Dion.

Tell about a favorite memory of your father.
Sitting on his lap in the recliner as a child every time we watched TV. I did it until I grew big enough that I hurt him and he said no more.

Have you ever been skinny-dipping?

Only in my bath tub.

Have you ever seen a UFO?
No. But I’m sure there are life forms on other planets though.

Have you ever seen a ghost?
No, I don’t believe in ghosts.

Have you ever had a bad experience with a haircut?
Yes. When I was in the 1st grade, I tried to cut my own hair. The next day my teacher asked me if I had cut my own hair. (lol) I lied.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m writing a book. All I’ve got done are the page numbers, though. Also, it is easy for me to love myself, but for ladies to do it is another question altogether. And I cannot sing, dance or act; that’s why I became a news reporter.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Brevard?
The people. I love a close knit community. In a time of need we all come together and stand behind each other. We’ve seen a lot of it here lately. That’s something you can’t get everywhere.

Do you have a secret you never told your parents?
I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw that my bath toys were a toaster and a radio.

Things I like:
Quilted Northern. The cream filled doughnuts at the Chinese Restaurant. And SpongeBob Squarepants.

Things I don’t like:
When people scrape their teeth against the fork while they’re eating. Ewwewwggghhhh

Favorite home-cooked meal recipe:
As a child my family’s menu consisted of two choices: take it or leave it. Grew up in an Italian family. Anything with red sauce. My father always made the best lasagna.

Which of your co-workers has the most annoying habits?
Don, definitely. I’m trying to work and he’s always making me laugh… annoying! That guy is somehow always right too. Uggh! How can people be so darn smart? Oh, and Terry too. She types so fast! It belittles me to hear my sloooowww pointing and clicking. And Bill, of course, always playing the best music and keeping me distracted. And then he’ll put in a hilarious sounder every now and again and it completely ruins my train of thought, laughing hysterically. Worst work crew ever!

What do you think people would say is your best quality?
Charm

Have you ever left home wearing your pajamas?
Last night. (lol) Haven’t you seen the people in Wal-Mart pictures. Makes my pj’s acceptable.

Who had the most influence (or had the biggest impact) on you while growing up?
My brother, 3 years older and I always looked up to him.

What’s the naughtiest thing you ever did as a child?
Saran wrapped the toilet on my sister. Boy did she scream. (lol)

What are you most thankful for?
My wonderful family. My beautiful son. All the support my friends give me (especially you, Jim Bollini), and of course all the “2nd” chances I’ve gotten. Really makes you appreciate life.

What do you remember about your very first date?
How uncomfortably scarred I was. I was so nervous and probably seemed ridiculous.

What specific memory of your childhood stands out the most?
Mud pies! I remember making Suzanne Collins a mud pie. Not sure why that stands out but… also, playing with my brothers and sisters. Also, the Pigeon Forge vacations.

If you won the lottery, what would you splurge on?
Cars! I’d have like ten of them! (lol) Probably not the smartest thing, but it’s a weakness, or a passion, whatever you want to call it. And, of course I’d pay bills and buy the parents a house, too.

What’s your favorite “de-stress” technique?
Relaxing on my bed while watching Sportscenter. Also, deep breathing and walks.

What celebrity do people say you look like?
Steve Buchemi (lol) No, I don’t get that very much.

If you could meet one celebrity, who would it be?
Jesus. (lol) No, um Joel McHale. That guy is funny. I’d like to spend lunch or maybe the day laughing with him.

Your favorite money-saving tip:
No good at that. (lol) Throw coins in a bucket.

What’s a goal you have for 2014?
Enjoy life more. Less stress. Appreciate what I’ve always taken for granted. Make more $$$$$.
