Brevardian of the Week: Philip Jarrett!

PhilipJarrettcroppedPlace of employment (what do you do & where?): Store Manager at Brevard Ingles

Any funny stories to share about your job?
I have several customers in the store that I like to scare when they come in to the store.

Any money-saving shopping tips (or best-kept secrets about Ingles) that you can share with us all?
Buy Laura-Lynn products… a lot cheaper than national prands and just as good. A lot are made by national brand companies.

What’s your biggest pet peeve, things shoppers do?
I hate it when a customer decides they don’t want something and they set it on the shelf and it ruins (like meat or frozen items).

Have you ever want to scream across the store, “People, a winter storm doesn’t mean it’s the end of civilization as we know it”…?
I have thought that several times, but the blizzard of ’93 changed that.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen people do in the store (that you can share)? Rolling turkeys down the aisle?
I’ve been in three different stores where customers have hit the gas instead of the gas and drove through the front windows.

What’s one item on your bucket list?
I would love to go to Alaska.

Ever had a brush with a celebrity in the Brevard Ingles?
Have not been lucky enough to see any celebrities in the 9 months I’ve been at the Brevard store.

Your favorite way to spend free time:
Love to play golf, hunt, fish and do anything outside.

If you were to give special praise to someone right now, who would it be?
The customers of Brevard that have made me feel so welcome in Brevard.

What’s one of the earliest memories you have of your childhood?
Had to get up at 4am on Christmas morning because my Dad worked at WLOS and had to open the station.

Have you ever had a nightmare boss?
I am lucky to have had great bosses.

What’s the best part about being the boss (at Ingles)?
I’ve always enjoyed the one-on-one relationship with customers in the store – Brevard customers are the best!

What’s the worst part of being the boss (at Ingles)?
Anything that happens bad always comes down to me. Nothing is really bad though.

Would you change careers if you could go back and do it all over again?
I wouldn’t change a thing. It has been a great place to work 40 years.

What song (or music artist) takes you back to your high school days?
Anytime a song is played by the group Boston.

Who was your favorite singer or group growing up?
Kiss – hard to believe?

What kind of music do you like to listen to today?
I like classic rock & southern gospel music.

What’s the naughtiest thing you did as a child?
Not really naughty, but when I was in the 1st grade, I walked down to a creek to see if it had frozen before school, and time got away from me. The school called my mother to see where I was because other students had seen me that morning. Needless to say, everyone was in a panic. An hour later, I walked in to the classroom. I was in big trouble at home.
